Support groups offer a safe, supportive environment where you can speak freely with others who share your experiences. Below are brief descriptions of the type of support groups available in our region.
American Cancer Society Programs

Information and Referral - The American Cancer Society can help people affected by cancer understand and manage the impact of the illness throughout their experience by providing information about community resources, support groups, educational programs and help with other practical needs such as transportation. http://www.cancer.org/docroot/home/index.asp
CanSurmount - A one-on-one buddy program in which patients are matched with survivors who have the same type of cancer or who have been through similar treatments. Family members can also request support from trained caregivers. http://www.cancer.org/docroot/home/index.asp
I Can Cope - An educational series for cancer patients and their families taught by healthcare professionals and held at various hospitals. www.cancer.org/docroot/ESN/content/ESN_3_1X_I_Can_Cope.asp
Look Good...Feel Better - Workshops in which trained, licensed cosmetologists teach women how to cope with changes in appearance due to cancer treatment, such as hair loss and skin care. http://www.lookgoodfeelbetter.org/
Man to Man - Self-help, community-based meetings for men with prostate cancer and their partners that provide education and the opportunity to network with others who have the same diagnosis. www.cancer.org/docroot/ESN/content/ESN_3_1X_Man_to_Man_36.asp
Reach to Recovery - A breast cancer support program that provides information, practical tips and encouragement for women with breast cancer before, during and after cancer treatment through visits and phone calls by trained American Cancer Society volunteers who are breast cancer survivors. http://www.cancer.org/docroot/ESN/content/ESN_3_1x_Reach_to_Recovery_5.asp
Road to Recovery - A transportation program in which rides are provided by volunteer drivers to help patients get to cancer-related treatments and doctor appointments. www.cancer.org/docroot/ESN/content/ESN_3_1x_Road_to_Recovery.asp
Specific Assistance Programs - Limited financial assistance is available to assist with cancer-related medications, medical equipment and supplies, homemaker help and other needs based on financial eligibility. www.cancer.org
Survivorship Activities - An annual conference is held which features workshops on practical issues confronting people with cancer during and after treatment. Family and other support persons welcome. Survivorship activities are also features at Relay for Life events held every spring. www.cancer.org
Young Survival Coalition - Young women facing breast cancer together. Further resources available via their website.
